Design Highlights & Unique Features:

Briefly describe the design highlights or unique features of this project:
Located at the heart of campus, the new multipurpose building at Trail’s End Camp is designed to serve as a central hub for activity, connection, and community. Envisioned as a long-term investment in the camp’s infrastructure, the facility will accommodate a wide range of uses—from daily programming to large-scale retreats and special events. The building program includes a café, dance studio, gymnasium, and flexible multiuse spaces capable of supporting diverse functions such as workshops, conferences, and recreational activities. Designed for adaptability, the interior features expansive, open rooms that can be reconfigured to meet evolving needs throughout the year.
What specific challenges did you face during this project, and how did JHA Companies solve them?
One of the primary challenges of the Trail’s End Camp multipurpose building project was balancing the functional needs of a highly flexible space with the camp’s overall budget. Given the size and variety of uses—ranging from a gymnasium and dance studio to conference areas and a café—HVAC design presented a particular challenge. JHA Companies approached this through a targeted value engineering process, working closely with the mechanical engineers to develop a system that met all code requirements, maintained comfort across multiple zones, and allowed for operational efficiency, all while reducing initial construction costs. Another layer of complexity arose from the integration of an outside vendor, Moka Origins, who would be operating the on-site coffee shop. JHA collaborated closely with both Trail’s End Camp and Moka Origins to ensure that the café space was thoughtfully designed to support the vendor’s operational needs while aligning seamlessly with the building’s overall architectural character and camp culture. This involved careful coordination of utilities, equipment layout, and finishes to create a cohesive and functional space that would serve both stakeholders effectively. By facilitating open communication among all parties and applying strategic design solutions, JHA successfully delivered a design that supports the camp’s programmatic goals, keeps construction within budget, and lays the groundwork for a welcoming and highly functional gathering space for years to come.
