Briefly describe the design highlights or unique features of this project:
In 2021, JHA Companies partnered with NEPA Community Healthcare to support the development of a new dental clinic as part of the organization’s mission to provide comprehensive, federally qualified health services—including primary care, behavioral health, women’s health, and dental care.
What specific challenges did you face during this project, and how did JHA Companies solve them?
From the start, JHA played a key role in evaluating the feasibility of the clinic within a 100-year-old building with significant structural and spatial constraints. Early collaboration with NEPA’s staff, medical team, and equipment suppliers ensured that the final layout aligned with operational needs and regulatory requirements.
JHA prepared full construction documents and led the design of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to support the specialized needs of a dental care facility. A major challenge was fitting the desired program—multiple operatories, support spaces, and staff areas—into an aging structure with low ceilings and no windows. In response, the design focused on maximizing functionality while creating a space that feels bright and open, using thoughtful lighting, finishes, and spatial planning.
During the design process, JHA helped the client identify potential cost overruns and provided value-engineering solutions to bring the project back in line with its funding constraints. By addressing these issues early, the project was able to proceed on schedule without sacrificing quality or programmatic goals.
This project highlights JHA’s ability to deliver creative, efficient, and cost-conscious solutions for healthcare clients operating in challenging existing spaces.
