Briefly describe the design highlights or unique features of this project:
As part of a strategic expansion of its housing capabilities, Camp IHC engaged JHA to design a new lodge-style facility to accommodate both seasonal staff and corporate retreat guests. Initially envisioned as a collection of traditional bunkhouse “villages,” the project’s scope evolved into a single, hotel-style building due to utility infrastructure limitations and site access requirements.
What specific challenges did you face during this project, and how did JHA Companies solve them?
The resulting design accommodates up to 350 occupants within a thoughtfully organized, multi-wing structure. To preserve the character and charm of the camp’s existing environment, the building was designed with a lodge-like aesthetic, featuring wood finishes, natural materials, and exterior entries for approximately half of the rooms—maintaining the outdoor-oriented experience integral to camp life.
JHA worked closely with Camp IHC leadership and construction partners to develop a design that balanced high occupancy needs with energy and utility efficiency, all while minimizing disruption to the surrounding site and camp operations. Circulation, access, and mechanical systems were strategically coordinated to reduce infrastructure impact and preserve the integrity of the existing camp layout.
The new lodge not only meets the camp’s growing seasonal housing demands but also expands its ability to host off-season events and retreats—enhancing the facility’s year-round value and strengthening its role as a destination within the region.
