MATT TOMAZIC, PLS

SURVEY PROJECT LEADER

We recently sat down with Survey Project Leader, Matt Tomazic to learn about what led him choose the land surveying profession. We also got to know some of his experiences as a land surveyor, and what he loves about working at JHA Companies. Originally from Clifford Township in Susquehanna County, PA, Matt attended St. Rose Elementary and Sacred Heart High School in Carbondale, PA, where he thought he would end up as a civil engineer. While attending college, he discovered it was “too much desk work”. He knew that math and geometry just came naturally to him, but also loved history, especially old maps and deeds. Matt’s father worked for local land surveyor Frank Gardner, and as a teenager, Matt thought, “Frank has a pool, so he must be doing alright [financially].” So during college, combining his love of the outdoors, history, proclivity for geometry, and the vision of a financially secure future, Matt decided to pursue land surveying and changed his major. After college, Matt worked for several firms and continued his education by pursuing his professional land surveyor license. He began as a project estimator and moved into a field surveyor role. He was able to work on a number of large projects, including the construction stakeout of the Kalahari Pocono Resort water lines. While he didn’t love the construction side of surveying, it was great experience. In 2014, Matt worked with JHA as a field surveyor, where he gained experience with natural gas pipeline as-built and boundary survey projects. He moved on to other opportunities, gaining experience with ALTA surveys and transportation/highway surveys before returning to JHA Companies in 2020.

Now licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor, Matt is now in a Project Leader role, estimating residential work and walking clients through their projects.

Outside of work, Matt likes to…work! He keeps busy by renovating his house in Wayne County, PA, gardening, hunting, fishing, and relaxing by doing woodworking. He also has to keep his eye on his sweet but independent hound dog, Ellie, that he adopted from the Dessin Shelter in Honesdale, PA.
