Following the loss of their original building to a fire, the Vanville Church of Christ partnered with JHA to design a new 11,000-square-foot worship facility that would serve their growing congregation while remaining within a carefully managed budget. The goal was to create an efficient, flexible building that maximized usable space, minimized transitional or underutilized areas, and reflected the church’s evolving needs.

What specific challenges did you face during this project, and how did JHA Companies solve them?

One of the central design challenges was achieving a layout that supported diverse programming—worship services, classrooms, fellowship events, and administrative functions—within the constraints of both site and budget. JHA worked closely with church leadership to prioritize spaces that provided the most value to the congregation, carefully planning circulation and adjacencies to enhance usability and minimize wasted square footage. Additional complexities included limited access to public utilities and the need to design a life safety-compliant facility without the use of a sprinkler system. JHA navigated these constraints by coordinating closely with local code officials to develop strategic fire-rated separations, exits, and occupancy zoning solutions. Aesthetic considerations were also central to the project’s success. The design needed to appeal to both the older, more traditional members of the congregation and a growing number of younger families. JHA achieved this balance through a thoughtful architectural language that combined classic forms with clean, contemporary detailing and a welcoming, light-filled interior. The result is a resilient and thoughtfully planned facility that reflects the mission and values of Vanville Church of Christ, supports its growing community, and positions the congregation for continued outreach and ministry.
