Briefly describe the design highlights or unique features of this project:
JHA provided preliminary architectural design services for a new double bunk building at Camp Wayne for Girls, thoughtfully integrated into the camp’s evolving master plan. The project was guided by the owner’s clear vision, which emphasized camper safety, strong programmatic adjacencies, and an enhanced residential experience.
What specific challenges did you face during this project, and how did JHA Companies solve them?
Located on a significantly sloping site, the design responded to both the challenging topography and the proximity of neighboring program spaces and sleeping quarters. Strategic site placement and massing ensured clear sight lines for supervision and security, while reinforcing the camp’s emphasis on connectivity and community.
Extensive time was spent analyzing the camp’s existing bunk buildings to identify successful elements and opportunities for improvement. These insights informed a design approach that balanced tradition with modern function—prioritizing comfort, durability, and a sense of place for future campers.
