Briefly describe the design highlights or unique features of this project:
After a structural inspection found the existing deck on a camp building intended for staff retreat unsafe, the camp’s leadership elected to move swiftly in reconstructing the substantial covered deck. The goal was to waste as little time in design and construction so that camp staff could continue enjoying panoramic lake front views in their downtime the following summer.
Constructed decades earlier out of wood members that were not pressure treated, JHA was tasked with redesigning the deck to current building codes and structural load requirements while maintaining the integrity of the original design aesthetic and scale.
Construction completed.
What specific challenges did you face during this project, and how did JHA Companies solve them?
There is always challenge when trying to recreate a design to current codes. JHA was able to honor the original design intention was using current design methods to create a structurally safe space for staff members.
