JHA Companies has partnered with Camp Starlight on several projects to support the camp’s evolving programs and long-term facility goals. Each effort reflected the camp’s vision for creating flexible, engaging, and safe environments for both campers and staff.

What specific challenges did you face during this project, and how did JHA Companies solve them?

One such project involved permitting and design support for the adaptive reuse of an existing mixed-use facility. The space was reimagined to accommodate more contemporary camper programming while ensuring compliance with current codes and safety standards.

JHA also collaborated with the camp’s contractor to design an updated amphitheater nestled into the site’s natural hillside. The design leveraged the existing grade to enhance both functionality and aesthetic, creating an inviting outdoor gathering space aligned with the camp’s rustic character.  

Another key initiative was the design of the "Farmhouse"—a versatile new building intended to serve as a cooking classroom, off-season meeting space, and lounge. The client’s goal was to create a warm, open environment that could adapt to a variety of uses. The mixed-use nature of the space presented unique code challenges, requiring careful navigation of occupancy classifications, ventilation needs, kitchen equipment integration, and life safety standards. JHA worked closely with the camp leadership, their preselected contractor, and the local code official to develop a solution that met all regulatory requirements while delivering on the camp’s vision for a highly functional, welcoming space.
